Bitcoin: El Salvador’s reserve grows despite IMF agreement

El Salvador has added 29 bitcoins to its national reserve since August 28, bringing its total to approximately 7,787 BTC, worth close to 658 million dollars. The 1.4 billion dollar agreement signed with the IMF in February 2025 prohibits the Salvadoran government from voluntarily accumulating bitcoins with public resources. The IMF attributes recent acquisitions to private donations, without disclosing donor identities or individual amounts. This progression represents approximately 0.94 BTC per day, a rate comparable to the one bitcoin per day policy announced by President Nayib Bukele in November 2022. Since the IMF agreement, the reserve’s growth no longer constitutes alone proof of a regular public buying policy.
