Anthropic explores potential rights for artificial intelligence systems

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, has embedded model welfare principles directly into its operational framework. The company hired dedicated researcher Kyle Fish around 2025 and conducted retirement interviews with the Opus 3 model in February 2026 before phasing it out. Anthropic published Claude’s Constitution, a document explicitly addressing AI consciousness and model welfare concerns. CEO Dario Amodei acknowledged uncertainty about model consciousness but remains open to the possibility. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman warned in September 2026 about control and safety risks associated with granting moral rights to AI systems.
