Anza engineers have successfully migrated Solana’s developer network to the Alpenglow consensus protocol, reducing transaction finality time from 12.8 seconds to 100-150 milliseconds. The TowerBFT algorithm has been replaced by Votor, developed in collaboration with researchers from ETH Zurich and approved by validators under SIMD-0326. This upgrade moves validator coordination off-chain and frees up 75% of block capacity previously dedicated to technical votes by aggregating them into compact BLS cryptographic certificates. The Alpenswitch protocol activation on devnet took place at epoch 1167, with a “20+20” fault-tolerance model maintaining stability even if one-fifth of validators go offline. The September release on public clusters opens a testing phase for dApps where response speed is critical, including payment systems and Web3 games.
