U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that all Iranian airlines will be shut down starting September 23, 2025. These carriers will no longer be able to obtain fuel, landing services, or sell tickets without risking exclusion from the dollar system. Washington is applying unprecedented pressure on Iran by targeting its financial enablers worldwide, including sanctioning banks. Separately, the United Kingdom announced it would support Saudi Arabia against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels by providing air-to-air refueling through the Royal Air Force. Houthi rebels recently seized Yemen’s Perim Island in the Red Sea, positioning Iran to control two critical oil chokepoints: the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz.
