Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, reportedly asked Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis not to approve Binance’s MiCA licensing application in Greece. The exchange filed its application in January and Greek officials signaled their intent to approve it by early June, but the process stalled and Binance ultimately withdrew its Greek application in late June, just days before the MiCA regulation took effect on July 1. Neither the ECB, Greek authorities, nor Binance have confirmed these allegations. The exchange stated it will seek authorization in another EU member state.
