Vitalik Buterin, the Canadian co-founder of Ethereum, posted on X that he is not giving up on privacy and is doubling down on his efforts in this area. He outlined Ethereum’s path toward « native privacy » including private reads, private writes, private proving, as well as a protocol-level shielded pool for ETH and ERC-20 transfers. Buterin advocates for the ecosystem to preserve four core properties summarized by the CROPS acronym: censorship resistance, open source, privacy, and security. The FOCIL protocol is also being considered to protect transactions associated with privacy protocols against censorship by malicious block builders. During a Bankless interview in August 2025, Buterin stated that « privacy is freedom, » recalling that confidentiality is at the core of the original cypherpunk movement.
