Solana reduced its target slot time from 300 to 250 milliseconds on Friday, marking the third speed reduction since August. This nearly 17% improvement makes blocks arrive more frequently but does not increase overall transaction throughput, as each shorter slot carries proportionally less computation. Applications requiring data freshness, such as oracles and automated market makers, are the main beneficiaries of this optimization. Epoch duration compresses from roughly 36 hours to about 30 hours. A final step to 200 milliseconds remains conditional on stable block-skip rates and has no confirmed mainnet activation date.
