House Democrats urge Trump administration to engage China on AI risks

More than two dozen House Democrats sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on September 18, pressing the Trump administration to open sustained diplomatic talks with China over national security risks posed by artificial intelligence. Spearheaded by Rep. Gregory Meeks, the initiative aims to establish structured communication channels between Washington and Beijing, deemed inadequate given the rapid advancement of AI capabilities. Rep. Ro Khanna has separately reached out to Chinese AI firms, including Moonshot AI and Alibaba, seeking commitments toward a binding international agreement on responsible AI development. Rep. Ted Lieu and Sen. Ed Markey also sent letters to President Trump urging guarantees on maintaining human oversight over nuclear weapon launch decisions.
