Six Malaysians have been sentenced by Singapore’s High Court for an armed robbery targeting an underground poker game settled in cryptocurrencies in the upscale Bukit Timah district in 2024. The two masterminds received twelve years and eleven months in prison and twenty-four cane strokes each, the maximum penalty under Singaporean law for adults. The total loot amounted to 4.906 million Singapore dollars (approximately 3.2 million euros) in cryptocurrencies, cash and luxury goods, but police only recovered 1.69 million Singapore dollars (approximately 1.1 million euros). These physical assaults targeting cryptocurrency holders, known as wrench attacks, have resulted in over 200 documented victims worldwide since 2014, with France alone accounting for nearly two-thirds of global attacks.
