Canada could become ‘first associate member’ of EU, bloc’s chief says

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Wednesday that the European Union is prepared to open the door for Canada to become the first associate member of the 27-nation bloc. Speaking during her annual state of the European Union address in Strasbourg, France, she spoke in the presence of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Canada, currently engaged in a trade war with the United States, has pledged to match the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump dollar for dollar. Carney had previously stated that Ottawa sought to establish a unique security and economic alliance with Europe.
