Samsung urged by hedge fund to buy back preferred shares in push to close valuation gap

South Korean hedge fund Life Asset Management is urging Samsung Electronics to repurchase and cancel its preferred shares, which are currently trading at approximately a 26% discount to common stock. The company already announced an $81.8 billion shareholder return plan of up to 110 trillion won through 2030 in August. The fund wants the Samsung board to review the proposal in October with share cancellations completed by December. This initiative is part of a broader wave of shareholder activism targeting South Korean conglomerates, whose governance structures often prioritize founding families over minority shareholders.
