Bulgaria tightens crypto tax rules, targets self-custody withdrawals

Bulgaria unanimously adopted the EU DAC8 directive on September 9, establishing automatic cross-border tax reporting for crypto assets. This law, over eight months behind the original January 2026 deadline, requires regulated platforms to collect and report user identities and traded volumes, covering both crypto-to-fiat and crypto-to-crypto transactions. External withdrawals to self-custody wallets are also targeted by this reporting obligation. The first cross-border sharing of tax reports is expected in January 2027, with Bulgaria ranking 19th across the EU for crypto adoption.
