He laid out four objections: large language models are not true AI, a pause benefits current leaders against rivals, safety warnings serve as promotion for IPOs, and the slowdown narrative masks fading growth as listings approach. Sam Altman ruled out an OpenAI IPO in 2026 citing safety, while Anthropic is targeting an IPO this autumn, with neither company yet profitable and Anthropic not expecting to break even before 2028.
