Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said Sunday that China presents the toughest dilemma for his proposal to slow AI advancement, as adversarial nations may not participate. Amodei published an essay on Saturday urging AI companies to slow their most advanced model improvements, proposing a three-step plan including third-party safety evaluations, coordination among leading AI companies in democratic countries, and government coordination. Several industry leaders including Elon Musk and Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind expressed support for the proposal. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said his company will likely not go public this year due to safety concerns. Anthropic has unilaterally committed to the first step of Amodei’s plan.
