AI Safety Burden Falls on Chief Executives as Trump Prioritizes China Race

President Donald Trump rejected calls from leading artificial intelligence executives to slow model development, arguing that any pause would hand China the lead in a race the United States must win. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that the burden of safety rests with the laboratories, which bear an obvious corporate responsibility. No federal regulation obliges Anthropic, OpenAI or xAI to follow through on their own calls for caution. Senator Bernie Sanders has demanded a full pause and wants a treaty with Xi Jinping, who is due to meet Trump at the White House on September 24.
