Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has raised concerns about the risks that cloud-based AI systems pose for researchers’ intellectual property. He commented on the case of University of California, San Diego mathematics professor Jay Cummings, who claims his unpublished work was used by ChatGPT for a major mathematical breakthrough. Hoskinson argues that AI models can use information from previous conversations to solve difficult problems rather than developing entirely independent approaches. He warned academics, researchers and entrepreneurs that ideas shared with cloud-based AI services would no longer belong to them. The Cardano founder then promoted the Midnight project, a privacy-focused blockchain associated with the Cardano ecosystem, as a solution that allows users to run AI models in private environments where their conversations would not be accessible to infrastructure operators.
