France’s National Assembly adopted a 5.5-cent-per-gigabyte tax on data sent to French networks by 35 votes out of 577 deputies as part of the 2027 budget. Two deputies admitted voting by mistake, including Éric Coquerel, who confirmed that he had pressed the wrong button. The measure, capped at 15% of revenue generated in France or 2% of global revenue, would target companies including Google, Meta, Amazon, Netflix and Akamai. Its sponsors expect it to generate 10 billion euros in annual revenue, but its final adoption depends on the solemn vote on the 2027 budget on Tuesday, November 3.
