The White House has defended President Trump’s September 10 proposal to send $5,000 checks to every adult American, branded as the « Trump Dividend. » The estimated cost of the measure ranges between $1.2 and $1.3 trillion, roughly ten times the approximately $125 billion in annual tariff revenues the administration cited as a potential funding source. Kevin Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council, insisted the plan could be executed responsibly, possibly through a congressional reconciliation bill. Some Republicans have voiced skepticism about the inflationary implications of injecting over a trillion dollars into consumer wallets, especially given that the administration never delivered on its previous $2,000 tariff rebate check promise. The proposal raises fundamental questions about U.S. fiscal sustainability, with the national debt already on a trajectory toward $40 trillion.
