Trump Crypto: Kevin Hassett Coinbase Stake Raises Conflict of Interest Concerns

Share

Kevin Hassett, Director of the National Economic Council under the Trump administration, disclosed holding between $1 million and $5 million in vested Coinbase shares according to a 2025 annual financial filing. Hassett served on Coinbase Asset Management’s advisory council from March 2021 until joining the White House in January 2025, just three days after Trump’s inauguration when an executive order established the President’s Working Group on Digital Asset Markets with Hassett’s office as a member. He claims to have recused himself from crypto matters, but the filing does not confirm whether he sold the shares or whether his recusal meaningfully limited his participation in policy decisions affecting Coinbase. A former SEC attorney described this as a major conflict of interest or appearance of one, while the White House confirmed the recusal remains in effect without confirming the status of the shares.
