Microsoft announced it will give every school district in the United States the option to include enforceable AI privacy and safety rules within its contracts, with legally binding protections. The plan was presented alongside the American Federation of Teachers and United Federation of Teachers unions, one week after New York announced a one-year moratorium on AI in public schools. The protections include bans on using student data to train AI models, tracking students, and letting AI make decisions without human review. More than 250 child-safety experts had called for an AI moratorium in schools in April. The unions hope OpenAI and Anthropic will also sign on to the commitment, which takes effect on November 1.
