After hitting oil tankers, Iran targets Navy warships and U.S. retaliates with ‘higher economic cost’ in new escalation that could transform the war

Iran launched missiles at U.S. bases around the Persian Gulf and then at a Navy aircraft carrier and destroyer. In response, the United States destroyed three Iranian oil tankers suspected of funding the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper warned that any strike on U.S. ships would result in an even higher economic cost. For Hamidreza Azizi, senior analyst at the International Crisis Group, this attack on U.S. warships crosses a different threshold in the escalation, and a successful strike could rapidly transform the conflict. The U.S. Treasury Department also pledged to inflict an economic D-Day on Iran with wider sanctions.
