Athlon Blockchain Technology LLC leaked between 3 and 3.8 million gallons of water from its Bitcoin mining facility in El Reno, Oklahoma, while the region suffered from a severe drought. The leak, caused by a damaged private water line connected to an unauthorized fire hydrant, caused water pressure to plummet across the city, forcing schools and public buildings to temporarily shut down. City officials condemned the site and issued a 10-day removal notice to the property owner. Mayor Steve Jensen confirmed that the city will charge Athlon for all water lost and response costs, as the water was metered. An administrative hearing is scheduled for September 14, and officials are considering enhanced monitoring systems for industrial water consumers.
