Scott Bessent says stablecoin firms could buy $1T in US debt

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that stablecoin companies could become buyers of American government debt worth $1 trillion. The GENIUS Act, signed into law on July 18, 2025, requires these issuers to back their tokens 100% with highly liquid assets, primarily short-term US Treasury bills. According to Standard Chartered analysts, the stablecoin market could reach $2 trillion by the end of 2028, generating between $800 billion and $1 trillion in additional demand for T-bills. Tether, the largest stablecoin issuer by market cap, already held over $141 billion in direct and indirect Treasury exposure by late 2025. The stablecoin market currently sits at approximately $300 billion to $310 billion as of September 2026, well below the projected $2 trillion to $4 trillion by 2030.
