IMF updates assessment, confirms El Salvador’s Bitcoin additions came from donations

The International Monetary Fund has officially revised its stance and now acknowledges that El Salvador’s Bitcoin reserves have genuinely grown, contradicting its previous claim that the country was merely moving coins between its own wallets. The IMF confirms this growth came entirely from private donations rather than public funds, meaning El Salvador did not violate the terms of its 1.4 billion dollar Extended Fund Facility program. The nation’s holdings stand at approximately 7,764 BTC as of September 2026. El Salvador has also transferred majority operational control of its Chivo wallet to a private operator. This update removes a barrier to a staff-level agreement that could unlock roughly 140 million dollars, with the IMF projecting 4.5 percent real GDP growth for 2026.
