Commerzbank CEO signals departure if no alignment with UniCredit

Commerzbank CEO Bettina Orlopp stated at the Handelsblatt Banking summit that she would likely leave if she cannot find common ground with UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel once the Italian lender takes control. UniCredit now controls up to 49.65% of Commerzbank’s voting rights, pending final regulatory approval expected later this year. Orcel is targeting roughly 1.2 to 1.3 billion euros in cost synergies and plans to keep the two banks’ operations separate until 2029 or 2030. A meeting between Orcel and German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil is scheduled for September 14, while the German government still holds approximately 12% of the bank. The European Central Bank has found no substantial grounds to block the deal.
