Pentagon faces leadership vacuum and weapons shortages six months into Iran conflict

Six months after launching Operation Epic Fury against Iran on February 28, 2026, the Pentagon is facing critical shortages. Patriot interceptor stockpiles have been depleted by approximately 65%, dropping from 2,300 to fewer than 827 units, while THAAD interceptors have fallen to about 60% of their original capacity. The US Army has lost half of its four-star generals, dropping from ten to five due to dismissals and resignations. The Center for Strategic and International Studies describes this as a window of vulnerability that meaningfully compromises the US military’s ability to respond to a second major conflict.
