The gap between machine-speed execution (milliseconds) and traditional settlement timelines (several days) represents a major structural challenge for international commerce. A cross-border payment initiated on Friday afternoon from Singapore may not achieve final settlement in São Paulo until the following Wednesday, tying up corporate working capital for multiple business days. In emerging markets, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, businesses are adopting reserve-backed stablecoins out of necessity to bypass persistent foreign exchange shortages and fragmented local banking systems. The Bank for International Settlements notes that the same stablecoin issued on two different blockchains exists on separate ledgers, complicating cross-chain settlement. Integration on a single platform combining execution, custody and settlement is emerging as the solution to eliminate infrastructure fragmentation and align settlement velocity with automation speed. Switzerland’s principles-based regulatory framework supervised by FINMA provides a favorable environment for developing institutional digital settlement infrastructure.
