Meta Platforms has agreed to pay $18 billion over ten years to 48 U.S. states in a historic settlement regarding the protection of minors on Instagram and Facebook. The required measures include a two-hour daily limit for users under 18, a midnight-to-6 a.m. access block for children under 13, hidden like counts, and strengthened age verification to keep under-13s off the platforms. Former Meta engineering director Arturo Béjar criticized the settlement by comparing the two-hour limit to allowing two hours of alcohol or cigarettes a day, arguing that Meta should define the harms minors experience. The agreement, which must still be approved by a judge, will only apply in the United States for a period of ten years.
