T1 Energy, formerly Freyr Battery, has secured approval from the municipality of Mo i Rana to convert 161,000 square feet of its Giga Arctic facility into a data center. The company expects initial capacity of 50 MW by 2027, with a grid allocation from Statnett valid through 2033. T1 Energy could reach nearly 450 MW in total through a pending expansion request for an additional 396 MW. This conversion leverages Norway’s near-complete hydroelectric power grid and Arctic climate for natural cooling. The company, listed on the NYSE under ticker TE, is pivoting its strategy toward AI compute infrastructure after exiting the lithium-ion battery sector.
