Meta has agreed to pay $16.7 billion to settle a federal social media addiction lawsuit brought by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and a bipartisan group of 51 state attorneys general. The participating states will receive approximately $12.7 billion over a ten-year period, with Meta having separately agreed to pay $1 billion to Texas. The company will also be required to implement changes to its apps, including daily usage limits and nighttime blocks for teenagers, along with enhanced age assurance measures. California and Texas did not participate in the group settlement and are continuing their own legal actions against Meta. Ongoing litigation involving school districts and individuals against Meta, TikTok, Snap and YouTube remains pending in a multidistrict litigation, with plaintiffs’ attorneys stating they intend to continue the legal fight.
