StarkWare completed the first quantum-safe Bitcoin transaction on mainnet on August 26, 2026, using the Quantum Safe Bitcoin construction developed by Avihu Levy, the company’s General Manager of Applications. This method replaces elliptic-curve cryptographic signatures with hash-based cryptography, specifically Lamport-style hash-based signatures using RIPEMD-160, providing resistance to Shor’s quantum algorithm. The implementation operates within Bitcoin’s existing Script limits, requiring no consensus rule changes or soft fork. The cost per transaction is estimated between $75 and $150, and the nonstandard transactions required the use of MARA Holdings’ Slipstream service to be mined.
