SHRINCS BIP published: Quantum-secure Bitcoin comes with a catch

Share

Blockstream has published a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal for SHRINCS, a post-quantum signature scheme specifically designed for Bitcoin, already tested in production on the Liquid sidechain. SHRINCS signatures range from 548 to 4,619 bytes, approximately nine times larger than current 64-byte Schnorr signatures, but would allow Bitcoin to maintain a throughput of around 3 transactions per second. In comparison, NIST-approved post-quantum schemes would reduce this throughput to 0.36 transactions per second. The scheme involves significant trade-offs: it requires stateful key management on the user’s device, and its security proof is not yet finalized.
