Shipyard, the independent engineering collective that maintained key implementations of the InterPlanetary File System since early 2024, will cease all operations by September 30, 2026. Protocol Labs, the original creator of IPFS, decided not to renew funding, taking back control of critical public services like ipfs.io and dweb.link. During its existence, Shipyard tripled gateway traffic capacity while reducing operating costs by approximately 80 percent. Several widely used open-source projects, including Kubo, Helia, Boxo, and Rainbow, are now left without dedicated maintainers. The IPFS protocol itself is not threatened, but the specific software implementations are entering a period of uncertain stewardship.
