New York added 30,640 tech workers in 3 years, surpassing San Francisco as AI hiring surges

New York has overtaken the San Francisco Bay Area as North America’s largest tech-talent workforce, with 394,300 workers versus 375,730 for San Francisco, according to CBRE’s Scoring Tech Talent 2026 report. Between 2022 and 2025, the New York Metro area added 30,640 tech positions while San Francisco shed 23,900, marking the first time in the report’s 13-year history that New York leads by headcount. The number of tech-talent workers with AI skills rose 45% year over year to 751,000 as of mid-2026. JPMorgan Chase plans to hire more AI specialists, and Bank of America reported that its new AI capabilities enable over 200,000 employees to work more effectively, contributing to a 59% efficiency ratio, an improvement of approximately 360 basis points from the previous year.
