The Sandbox Security Flaw: A Hack That Worries Upbit and Bithumb

Share

Upbit and Bithumb, South Korea’s two leading cryptocurrency exchanges, have placed The Sandbox’s SAND token under vigilance following the discovery of a security flaw in the cross-chain bridge used on Base and BNB Smart Chain. The attacker managed to issue uncollateralized SAND on these two networks, with estimates reaching 14.9 billion tokens created according to PeckShield, nearly five times the official maximum supply of three billion. The Sandbox claims the actual impact remains below 0.01% of total supply, that tokens on Ethereum and Polygon as well as user wallets are unaffected, and that transfers to the compromised networks have been disabled. Bithumb must issue its decision between September 28 and October 2: lift the designation, extend surveillance, or proceed with delisting SAND.
