SoftBank plans record ¥1T bond sale to fund OpenAI investments

SoftBank Group is launching the largest bond issuance in Japan’s history, selling ¥1 trillion (approximately $6.3 billion) in retail bonds. The funds will finance the Japanese conglomerate’s growing investments in OpenAI, with total commitments now exceeding $60 billion. This operation brings SoftBank’s total fundraising from Japanese retail investors to approximately ¥1.68 trillion this year. The group is targeting an ownership stake of approximately 11% to 13% in OpenAI through its Vision Fund 2. The bond strategy forms part of a broader refinancing plan including a $40 billion unsecured bridge loan maturing in March 2027.
