Canada sees little chance of resuming trade talks with US before midterms

Canada has suspended trade negotiations with the United States after talks collapsed in late August, when Washington imposed 50% tariffs on 20 to 28 billion dollars worth of Canadian goods. Ottawa announced retaliatory tariffs set to take effect on September 8, matching the severity of the US measures. Prime Minister Mark Carney stated he sees no burning issue requiring immediate dialogue with the Trump administration. Canada is betting that the economic pain from tariffs will become a political liability for the US administration ahead of the November midterm elections, choosing to let consequences play out rather than negotiate under newly imposed tariff pressure.
