Jeff Bezos proposes that the bottom half of U.S. earners should pay no federal income tax, citing the example of a nurse in Queens earning $75,000 a year who currently pays over $1,000 a month in taxes. In 2023, the bottom 50% of taxpayers (those earning roughly under $54,000) accounted for only 3% of all federal income taxes, paying an average of about $913 per household. Bezos, with an estimated net worth of $280 billion, plans to advocate for this idea with political leaders, arguing it would represent only a small amount of money for the government. A ProPublica investigation found that Bezos’s so-called true tax rate was 0.98% between 2014 and 2018, and that he paid no federal income tax at all in 2007 and 2011.
