Iran seeks deal with US, but Trump says terms aren’t right yet

Iran wants to strike a deal with the United States, but president donald trump said on august 17 that the terms offered by tehran do not meet washington’s requirements. The memorandum of understanding signed on june 17 between the two countries, which provided for the reopening of the strait of hormuz and a 60-day timeline for deeper negotiations on sanctions relief and nuclear commitments, has now expired with little to show for it. The United States has sanctioned over 100 vessels tied to iran’s maritime operations in 2026 alone, and treasury secretary scott bessent suggested that the harshest sanctions in history could be imposed on iran. The strait of hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of the world’s daily oil consumption flows, remains a central issue in these negotiations, while diplomatic and economic pressure is expected to intensify further.
