US government unlikely to buy Bitcoin for Strategic Reserve, says Bitget CEO

Bitget CEO Gracy Chen believes the US government will likely not purchase Bitcoin for its Strategic Bitcoin Reserve before Trump leaves office. The reserve, which holds approximately 198,000 BTC worth $17.3 billion, is limited exclusively to Bitcoin seized through civil and criminal forfeiture proceedings, with no possibility of acquisition using public funds due to budget neutrality requirements. This legal framework prevents any active market purchases, limiting the US strategy to a simple hold commitment rather than active sovereign accumulation as practiced by El Salvador or Bhutan. The actual impact of the reserve lies in permanently removing 1% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply from potential sell pressure, strengthening the price floor rather than pushing the ceiling higher. Bitcoin currently trades around $91,151 with a total market capitalization of approximately $1.81 trillion.
