Developers experimenting with GPT-5.5 since its April 2026 launch have found that the model maintains high performance even when development tools aggressively compress its one million token context window. On the MRCR v2 8-needle benchmark, GPT-5.5 scored 74.0% compared to just 36.6% for its predecessor in the 512K to 1M token range. When context is compressed to approximately 85%, the model compensates by intensifying its use of retrieval mechanisms to recover lost information. Designed for agentic tasks such as advanced coding and autonomous research, GPT-5.5 preserves output quality despite active compression techniques.
