Facing weary customers, Walmart will use its nearly $3 billion in tariff refunds to lower prices

Walmart received nearly $2.9 billion in tariff refunds ruled unlawful by the Supreme Court and plans to reinvest the money to cut prices amid mounting pressure on consumers from inflation. The retailer expanded its promotional lineup to over 11,000 items from roughly 7,200 last quarter, focusing on grocery and ground beef. U.S. sales rose 2.6% in the latest quarter, missing analysts’ expectations of 3.8% growth and marking its first comparable-sales miss in over five years. Consumer strain intensified in June as gas prices exceeded $4 per gallon. Walmart raised its full-year sales outlook to 4-5% growth from 3.5-4.5%, anticipating that its pricing investments will drive stronger sales and market-share gains.
