Alberto Musalem, the new president of the St. Louis Fed, has indicated that an immediate interest rate hike could prevent the need for more drastic measures in the future. This stance aligns with his previous advocacy for a 25 basis-point rate increase at the July FOMC meeting. Though not a current voting member of the FOMC, Musalem has emphasized that gradual rate hikes are preferable to larger adjustments later, especially as inflation remains elevated above the Fed’s 2% target. The current federal funds rate range stands at 3.50% to 3.75%.
