Meta braces for federal child privacy trial in California

Opening arguments begin Tuesday in a federal trial where 29 state attorneys general, co-led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta, accuse Meta of designing Instagram and Facebook to be addictive to children and violating child-privacy laws. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, who recently secured nearly $1 billion in damages against Meta in a separate case, described the potential outcome as « astronomical ». Meta claims states are seeking $1.4 trillion in penalties, while states estimate the figure closer to $200 billion. A loss could force Meta to overhaul the recommendation algorithms that drive user engagement and advertising revenue.
