Bitcoin beaten by Pikachu: Pokemon cards surge 23% in three months

According to a study by the Rand Group, the Pokemon card index rose 22.8% over three months, significantly outperforming the S&P 500 (+4.7%) and bitcoin (-20.7%). The collectible card market, valued between 10 and 15 billion dollars, has gained nearly 28% since the start of the year. Retail confirms this trend: Target saw its collectible card sales jump 70% in 2025, exceeding one billion dollars in revenue. This valuation is driven by nostalgia among young adults and the physical scarcity of vintage pieces, exemplified by the sale of a Pikachu Illustrator card for 16.5 million dollars. eBay recorded over 2.6 billion dollars in card sales in 2025, showing growing liquidity in the secondary market.
