Chinese tech giant Alibaba launched an AI model, Qwen3.8-27B, designed to run on consumer hardware like laptops. The company also released the weights of Qwen3.8 Max, its most powerful model, enabling free download and execution. According to Hugging Face, Qwen-based models now account for 151,448 derivations, which is 2.6 times Meta’s total footprint. Alibaba aims to consolidate its position as a leader in open-weight AI against U.S. competition and Chinese labs like DeepSeek. Industry experts believe the next battleground for AI models will be their ability to run on edge devices rather than in data centers.
