Taiwan launched its largest military exercises in the island’s history on August 5, spanning 10 days and involving civilians, businesses, local governments, and media in an unprecedented whole-of-society approach to war preparedness. The Han Kuang drills, held annually since 1984, featured air raid drills in Taipei streets, deliberate throttling of mobile internet speeds across at least 14 regions, and civilian factory mobilization as if wartime production orders had been issued. Urban resilience drills expanded to two full days, covering first aid training, medical evacuations, and drone-based supply deliveries, while military exercises simulated merchant ship escort operations and fighter jet dispersal strategies. Taiwan produces the vast majority of the world’s most advanced semiconductors, making these exercises particularly significant for global supply chains and multinational companies dependent on Taiwanese manufacturing.
