The Danube River’s water levels have dropped so low due to drought that the hulls of dozens of German World War II battleships have emerged from the water. These wrecks belonged to Nazi Germany’s Black Sea fleet, which was deliberately scuttled in September 1944 near Prahovo to slow the Soviet advance in the Balkans. Historians say up to 200 German warships were scuttled at that time. Record low water levels have also forced power plants to the brink of shutdown and Central and Eastern European governments to take electricity conservation measures. River traffic is almost paralyzed as large ships can no longer pass through.
