Aerodrome Finance, the decentralized exchange built on Coinbase’s Base Layer 2, captured 54% of all BTC-USD spot trading volume across EVM-compatible DEXs in July, more than all other EVM DEXs combined. Operating on Base with low transaction costs and Coinbase’s user base integration, the protocol surpassed $400 billion in cumulative trading volume less than three years after its August 2023 launch without venture capital backing. Aerodrome controls 50 to 65 percent of Base’s overall DEX market share through its vote-escrow governance model (veAERO) and zero-leak revenue structure where 100% of fees go to liquidity providers and voters. The protocol is merging with sister protocol Velodrome on Optimism to create a cross-chain MetaDEX targeting Ethereum mainnet and other EVM chains. This dominance raises systemic risk concerns as any smart contract vulnerability, governance attack, or regulatory action would directly impact on-chain Bitcoin trading.
