Chipotle Mexican Grill shares fell more than 5% in afternoon trading after Bloomberg reported that the burrito chain had temporarily pulled jalapeños from restaurants in Minnesota over a potential link to a salmonella outbreak. The company said it used its ingredient traceability system to identify jalapeños from a common lot as a potential source, removing them and replacing them with products from different growers. The stock reaction reflects investor concerns that this marks a return to Chipotle’s troubled past, when it was linked to at least five separate foodborne illness outbreaks between 2015 and 2018. Broader consumer fears about foodborne illness also impacted Chipotle’s sales in the second half of July, amid an ongoing cyclospora outbreak that has caused over 6,700 confirmed cases and two deaths in Michigan.
